Japanese Kofu Dama - Single Beads (1 )
-
Beautiful handmade spheres containing modern Kimono fabrics in traditional Japanese styles.
Unknown to many outside Japan and especially imported by ATB as the first stockist to offer them world-wide.
-
Kofu Dama beads are used to decorate obi sashes, netsuke, bracelets, hair ornaments and phones
in Japan and can be incorporated into unique western-style jewellery.

       ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
They are the invention of an experienced Kimono maker, who loved her work as a seamstress but did not want to waste even a tiny piece of the very expensive vintage silk fabric she was using.
-
Antique Kimono silk is highly sought after and commands very high prices, with its rarity being identifiable by its distinct patterns .. in very much the same was as most ancient beads are identified by their designs.
-
.Continuing the Buddhist philosophy of Mottainai, she thought of a clever way to be able to utilise the waste fabric left over after the Kimonos had been made, by incorporating it into beads.
-
The process of making these beads is time-consuming and skilful: Specially cut pieces of fabric are affixed to a central silicon core which is coated with a layer of acrylic resin to form a perfectly spherical bead.
The Dama - Japanese word for Bead - is then drilled and individually polished to a very high gloss.
-
-An interesting fact is that Japanese people of the modern era are usually a lot taller than their forefathers and early Kimonos no longer fit their descendants. Many families have their inherited antique Kimonos taken apart into large pieces of material and re-sewn into modern clothing, children's Kimonos and Kofu Dama.
Thus enabling them to hold onto their family traditions and their ancestors' "spirit".
-
The four different sizes of beads displayed below contain modern Kimono fabric in traditional patterns.
This is far less expensive to use than rare antique silk, but is just as artistically colourful. All have 2 mm holes which, if necessary, you can easily enlarge with a sharp drill, to suit your personal stringing requirements
